Job Title: Senior Governmental Accountant 

Position Type: Full Time, Exempt

Salary or Pay Range: $65,000-$85,000/academic year

The Senior Accountant will join the Westgate Community School‚Äôs Business team. This role is responsible for managing an exceptional accounting function to serve the Westgate community. Therefore, this individual will embrace continuous improvement and innovation, is able to hold a short-, mid-, and long-term lens as needed, and can flex between hands-on and strategic work. 

 

The Senior Accountant will be responsible for maintaining budgetary operations in accordance with Colorado Educational Accounting Standards; to ensure revenues and expenses are within budget limits and overall fiscal policies and/or practices meet compliance requirements; to maintain accurate balances; to evaluate the feasibility of services within budget parameters; to ensure efficient use of financial resources; and to perform necessary accounting tasks in a timely manner.

Job Duties:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Essential functions of the job may include but are not limited to the following:

  • The Senior Accountant for Westgate Community School will report directly to the Director of Business and ultimately to the Executive Director of Westgate Community School
  • The Senior Accountant will work closely and collaboratively with school leadership and cross-functional departments fostering a culture of excellence
  • The Senior Accountant will be responsible for maintaining financial operations in accordance with Colorado Educational Accounting Standards; to ensure revenues and expenses are within budget limits and overall fiscal policies and/or practices meet compliance requirements; to maintain accurate balances; to evaluate the feasibility of services within budget parameters; to ensure efficient use of financial resources; and to provide financial guidance and recommendations to administration; to perform necessary accounting tasks in a timely manner
  • Implements reporting procedures and program requirements for the purpose of assuring accurate maintenance of records, implementing and managing the account code structure and procedures in accordance with State of Colorado guidelines
  • Constructs and maintains spreadsheets for financial analysis
  • Understands, and can function in day-to-day operations along with our Director of Business in the following: payroll processing, PERA/401(k) submissions, benefit reconciliation, bank reconciliation, AP, deposits, and grants
  • Monitors fund and account balances for the purpose of ensuring that all allocations are accurate, related revenues are generated, expenses are within budget limits and fiscal practices are followed
  • Prepares various budgets (e.g., general funds, special funds, etc.) for the purpose of providing financial guidance and recommendations to the Director, Principals, Administrators and Board
  • Prepares monthly financials and cash flow statements/analyses
  • Processes fiscal information for the purpose of updating information and/or authorizing final action in compliance with accounting requirements
  • Researches and resolves discrepancies of financial information and documentation
  • Performs account reconciliations of Balance Sheet accounts
  • Supports the Business office and school leadership on issues related to facilities, building purchases, bonds, construction and repairs
  • Accomplishes all tasks as assigned or requested

  • Must have the ability and proven ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.
  • Knowledge and implementation of relevant technology. 
  • Perform all other related work delegated or required to accomplish the objectives of the total school program. 

 

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • Minimum of 3 years of accounting experience within a governmental or school environment
  • Experience utilizing Specialized Data Systems (SDS) accounting system preferred
  • Other background demonstrating application of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Advanced knowledge of GASB and of GAAP principles
  • Advanced knowledge of budget preparation and control
  • Advanced knowledge and super-user of Excel
  • Advanced knowledge of State and Federal regulations that relate to school accounting processes
  • Strong ability to meet deadlines reliably and to plan and manage projects
  • Advanced skill in maintaining accurate records 

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

 

Other Information:

  • This position may require successful completion of pre-employment checks to include a criminal background check, fingerprinting and drug screening.
  • This position normally works Monday - Friday
Some weekend and evening hours due to conferences or extracurricular activities may be required
