Dear Board Chairs,
It was wonderful to see many of you at our September 25 live cohort meeting. If you weren’t able to join, you can view the recording here:

During the session, we previewed the League’s new board training resources, set to launch next month, and underscored the importance of ongoing board development. Research by Gawlik and Allen (2019) found that many charter board members felt underprepared when they first began serving. Even those who believed they were ready often lacked key skills, especially in areas such as finance, revenue processes, and expenditure oversight.
This raises two important questions for all of us to consider:
- Do you feel equipped to fully meet your responsibilities as a board member?
- How are you intentionally building training into your board calendar?
Our next opportunity to connect in person will be at the League’s Leadership Summit on October 10 at The Ritz-Carlton, Denver. We’ll have a table reserved during breakfast to encourage informal conversation and camaraderie. If you haven’t registered yet, you can do so here: https://coloradoleague.org/events/leadership-summit-2025.html
Looking ahead, our next virtual cohort call will be on November 12 at 11:30 AM.
In the meantime, if you have any questions about your role as a board chair—or governance in general—please don’t hesitate to reach out to me directly or engage with your peers in the community discussion forum.
In partnership,
Kia Murray
