Duties and Responsibilities
  • Safe Operation of School Bus
  • Report to the bus parking lot at required times and maintain assigned scheduled times with an emphasis on safety.
  • Operate, inspect, and report defects of transportation fleet vehicles in all weather and road conditions.
  • Obey all traffic laws.
  • Observe all mandatory safety regulations for school vehicles.
  • Provide support for students with disabilities, including, but not limited to, the proper use of transportation equipment, attending to hygienic needs and behavioral challenges, monitoring medical conditions, and utilizing specialized communication tools.
  • Communicate with Peak to Peak representatives, parents/guardians, and community members.
  • Maintain assigned vehicle cleanliness and route guides.
  • Monitor and manage the behavior of all riders using management strategies and student discipline while monitoring for suspected child abuse, harassment, bullying, and medical conditions.
  • Identify and respond to emergencies on the bus, which may include the administration of standard First Aid, body fluid clean-up, and evacuation procedures.
  • Accept responsibility for the safe transportation of students and assure they are all accounted for after each run, route, or trip.
  • Complete and submit mandatory paperwork to appropriate school officials or as requested by the Executive Director of Operations, including but not limited to pre-trip and post-trip inspections, trip logs, and attendance rosters.
  • Provide input to school officials concerning the effectiveness and accuracy of assigned routes with respect to design, student stops, safety issues, time, and student information.
  • Maintain professional communication and demeanor with all employees, students, and community members while being responsible for a safe and collaborative environment on the bus.
  • If applicable, communicate on a two-way radio system following Federal Communications Commission regulations.
  • Complete all required courses, evaluations, and meetings.
  • Collaborate in the planning of bus evacuation plans and student management techniques on assigned routes, and conduct emergency evacuation drills as required

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.

Reporting Structure

The Bus Driver reports directly to the Executive Director of Operations.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must pass Pre-Employment/Post-Offer Physical Examination; required upon hire.
  • Must pass transportation equipment evaluation within 30 days of hire.
  • Currently hold a valid Colorado Driver's License.
  • Possess or obtain a Colorado Commercial Driver's License Class B with P and S endorsement with no airbrake restriction within 30 days of hire.
  • An up-to-date Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Examiner's Certificate (MEC) is required upon hire.
  • Submit a current Motor Vehicle Record (MVR). Must be insurable and maintain insurability per Colorado School Districts Self Insurance Pool (CSDSIP) standards (MVR Insurability Standards); required upon hire.
  • Experience working with children in a K-12 setting preferred
  • Proficient in basic computer operations.
  • Training in Child Safety Restraint Systems for School Buses must be acquired within 30 days of hire.
  • Training in two-way radio systems is required upon hire.
  • Must maintain all required certifications throughout employment.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, policy and expectation documents, staff agreements, performance evaluation documentation, and contract for services documents.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
