Board Trainings

Charter schools are unique public schools in that they have a board of directors at the school level, where traditional public schools are governed by the local school district's board of directors.

With this being the case, effective governance is a critical component to a high-quality charter school. It is a best practice for charter school boards to engage in professional growth opportunities and focus on continuous improvement as a board and a school on a semi-annual basis. The League offers a number of support services, resources and training opportunities for charter schools including the following.

Customized Board Training

Workshops are held at your charter school or location of your choosing and are facilitated by a member of our cadre of experienced charter school professionals.

League trainings generally focus on the following themes, but all workshops are customized via a pre-session survey and conference call to determine your school's unique needs, goals and key issues. Most boards cover one topic per hour in a training session. Themes may include:

  • Legal responsibilities

  • Roles and responsibilities

  • Building a strategic board

  • Board committees

  • Financial oversight

  • Policy development

  • External relations

  • Running effective meetings

  • Board continuous improvement

  • Performance Management

  • Strategic Planning

Half-day and full-day trainings are available: SEE OUR BOARD TRAINING OFFERINGS (PDF).

Strategic Planning Facilitation

Charter school boards are responsible for ensuring effective organizational planning. Developing a sound strategic plan is key to supporting effective governance and leadership. Strategic plans range from specific goals such as facilities acquisition to more general purposes such as guiding the school’s strategic priorities and continuous improvement.

As part of a strategic plan facilitation, a League facilitator assists charter schools with items such as strategic planning process design, SWOT analysis, and identifying key performance indicators, measures, metrics and targets.
