Position Summary:
An Ascent Classical Academy Headmaster is the leader in a school and its community, entrusted with the education and well-being of its students and the academic reputation of that community. The Headmaster acts as a steward of substantial public and private funds and ultimately, a contributor to the future viability of the nation through the passing on of wisdom and virtue to its future citizens. The leader of a classical school knows that they are shaping students for lives of virtue, and that a classical education is a training for both the mind and the heart. The leader is equally attentive to the school's curriculum, pedagogy, culture, and operations. Our Headmasters understand the value of a liberal arts education and can articulate that clearly and effectively. As a proponent of American classical education informed by the Western tradition, our school fosters a culture of principled self-government and civic responsibility.
Essential Functions:
- Provides general management of all school operations, including academic, financial, personnel, regulatory, and facility areas
- Knowledge of the craft of the educator, and the ability to teach well. Observe teachers at defined intervals, document results, and provide feedback as mentor and supervisor
- Reports at regular school board meetings on the status of operations, special education services, and plans for upcoming activities
- Represents the school as the senior executive leader in interactions with the public, the school constituencies, the authorizer or accreditor, and other government agencies
- In coordination with the organization's CFO, adhere to all financial management principles, including planning a budget and managing it throughout a school year, the needs and expectations of regular auditing, and a system of sound fiscal controls
- In conjunction with the Board's fundraising strategy, implement fundraising events and community partnerships to advance the school's mission and priorities
- Ensure a safe and secure school environment by implementing comprehensive safety plans, including oversight of the Governing Board's Plan to Authorize Concealed Carry, compliance with state regulations, and collaboration with local law enforcement and safety stakeholders
- Be a leader within the network in strategic planning in partnership with the other Headmasters within the ACACS network
- Lead the coordination between the school site and staff with the Shared Service team, the CFO,and Minga Education Group
- Performs other related duties as directed
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Bachelors degree
- Masters preferred in related field (ie Education or Business)
- Demonstrable experience in supervision and management in an academic setting
- The ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms
- A general understanding of personnel management principles, including recruiting and hiring, supervising, and evaluating, and individual and organizational development
- Leadership. Specifically, the ability to discern the ends that fulfill the nature and purpose of theorganization, and to chart a course to reach those ends; the ability to inform and inspire people tofollow, to commit, to take responsibility, to perform, and to cooperate in an effective manner.The ability to raise up leaders in an organization
- Willingness to hold responsibility for everything that occurs within the school, carrying out that duty with humility and flexibility, with a willingness to take on any task, even if it seems menial. The headmaster is keen on delegation with clear direction, yet accountable for every facet of the school
- 5+ years of experience in classical charter education (preferred)
- 3+ years of experience in a leadership role in education (preferred)
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer or standing to teach.
