Gifted & Talented Coordinator (emphasis in Secondary)

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supports gifted and twice-exceptional students
- Advocates for the student’s appropriate academic group and class placement
- Participates in trainings and classes to further educate and enhance learning about the full spectrum of gifted and twice-exceptional students
- Administers and interprets a variety of assessments and testing measures to identify students; meets regularly with parents/guardians and teachers.
- Understands the affective needs of gifted students to effectively assist these students and to recognize and support gifted, underachieving students, and consults with counseling staff as necessary to provide appropriate support
- Maintains individual student records, including the body of evidence for each gifted and twice-exceptional student file
- Assists the Special Education teacher and other specified student support staff in coordinating efforts to meet the needs of twice-exceptional students
- Communicates regularly with classroom teachers and counselors regarding student needs and progress, and participates in conferences between parents/guardians, administrators, teachers, and other appropriate staff and students; helps teachers to design differentiated/individualized lessons for students as needed
- Supports educators in supplementing classroom instruction according to students’ individual learning needs or to address specific group needs
- Collaborates and coordinates with teachers through one-on-one sessions, workshops, or by providing resources regarding best practices for gifted education and student outcomes.
- Trains staff in recognizing characteristics of gifted and twice-exceptional and the body of evidence required for students to be nominated for testing.
- Collaborates with teachers to observe students in class and makes recommendations to teachers on meeting students’ needs
- Participates in MTSS (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support) and SSTs (Student Support Team) meetings, as needed
- Understands and educates staff on a variety of teaching and learning styles, lesson planning, and activities to help meet the needs of these students
- Informs teachers, parents/guardians, and other staff on techniques and strategies for teaching gifted children, as well as providing other general information on giftedness
- May mentor teachers and staff as determined by the level principals and the Director of Professional Development
- Supports gifted and twice-exceptional programming, systems, and corresponding administrative and reporting responsibilities
- Responsible for establishing and monitoring appropriate placement and utilization of the following strategies: acceleration, cluster grouping, ability grouping, and flexible grouping
- Prepares and updates Appropriate Learning Plans (ALPs) and communicates with parents/ guardians and students on the ALPs
- Focuses on one priority challenge each year; in collaboration with administration, develops and implements a plan for progress monitoring
- Collects and disseminates information on school and community-based speakers and programs pertinent to giftedness to parents/ guardians and staff
- Coordinates programs and resources to support gifted students in their areas of passion
- Attends monthly BVSD Gifted and Talented (GT) meetings
- Completes and submits the GT End of Year Report to the district each school year
- Establishes a working relationship with the district’s GT office
- Collects, analyzes, and reports on GT-specific data (including but not limited to overall percentage, ethnicity, and gender of GT population) for progress monitoring and determining cohort group needs
- Participates in professional development opportunities to increase understanding of gifted learners, encouraging teacher and other staff participation in these, and communicating new information to colleagues
- Submits articles regularly for the community newsletter
- Maintains the ALPs database and ongoing communication with GT families
- Continues intellectual and professional development and pursues further education in the primary academic discipline
- May provide leadership to select extracurricular school activities, act as the teacher liaison to select committees, and/or participate in the open enrollment process
- Follows policies established by the Peak to Peak Board of Directors, and district and state-mandated school guidelines, except where Peak to Peak has received waivers
- Other duties as assigned
Education, Experience, and Desired Skills:
- College degree required, Master’s degree desirable
- Endorsement in Gifted and Talented education preferred, with a commitment to work toward endorsement if needed
- Strong organizational and coordination skills
- Ability to assess grade level needs and plan and organize accordingly
- Strong self-starter; able to work with limited direction
- Excellent interpersonal, conflict management, and problem-solving skills
- Demonstrated experience working with challenge groups in a student-centered environment within the classroom, including using assessments to place students, curriculum compacting, flexible pacing, flexible instruction, grouping and regrouping, acceleration, enrichment, and independent study to meet student needs
- Highly developed written and oral communication skills are required
- Proficient with a variety of computer programs, including Google Suite & other technology to support learning
- CPR and First Aid certification
- Strong self-starter; able to work with limited direction
- Ability to assess grade level needs and plan and organize accordingly.
- Ability to apply superb judgment in a timely manner
