The Compass Academy model infuses a strong values-based culture, additional people power, and evidence-based practices to maximize student success and the delivery of individualized interventions. The school features a bilingual program in which students receive 20% of their daily core subject instruction in Spanish from bilingual instructors. The school also has a full Social-Emotional Learning program with a full-time school counselor, school psychologist, and social worker. City Year / AmeriCorps members (CMs) will be with students throughout the entire academic day, partnering with teachers to provide whole-class support, as well as 1:1 and small group academic support to students. The school launched in 2015 with 112 6th graders and now serves about 300 students in grades 6-8. Compass seeks to eventually serve approximately 650 students in grades 6-12 at full capacity. Compass Academy is supported by City Year - AmeriCorps and the Center for Social Organization of Schools at Johns Hopkins University. These two national non-profit education organizations hold a combined experience of 50 years in helping students succeed.
