Report: Impact of HSMA on Students Attending Rural Charter Schools in Colorado

A new study shows that Healthy School Meals for All is improving participation, attendance, and equity in rural charter schools—helping students learn better and communities thrive.

A new study by the Colorado League of Charter Schools, supported by The Colorado Trust, explores how Colorado’s Healthy School Meals for All (HSMA) program is impacting students in six rural charter schools.

Findings show strong gains in participation, with more students eating daily school meals, along with improvements in attendance, behavior, and overall school climate. Families report reduced financial stress and less stigma around taking school meals—especially in small rural communities where food insecurity is often hidden.

While schools face challenges with staffing and kitchen infrastructure, the program’s benefits are clear: HSMA is helping students feel nourished, focused, and ready to learn.

Without continued funding, school leaders warn, those gains could be lost—making HSMA a critical investment in educational equity and student well-being across Colorado.
