Position Overview

The High School Social Worker is a key member of the Student Success Team and plays a central role in supporting students’ social-emotional wellbeing, mental health, and overall engagement in school.

Under the direction of the Principal and Assistant Principal, the Social Worker provides direct mental health services to students, coordinates Section 504 plans, and collaborates with staff to implement schoolwide supports through a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS). The role includes individual and small group counseling, crisis intervention, family partnership, and coordination with outside service providers.

This position requires a culturally responsive practitioner who believes deeply in student potential and is committed to helping students overcome barriers to academic success and long-term wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities

Student Mental Health & Direct Services
  • Provide direct social-emotional and mental health services to students through individual counseling and small group interventions.
  • Support students with identified mental health needs, including those receiving IEP mental health service minutes.
  • Develop and implement interventions, coping strategies, and social skill supports that empower students to succeed socially and academically.
  • Utilize evidence-based and culturally responsive practices when working with students and families.
  • Support students experiencing barriers to engagement including attendance challenges, trauma, housing instability, and other external stressors common in alternative school environments.
  • Section 504 Coordination & Special Education Collaboration
  • Serve as the school’s Section 504 Coordinator, leading 504 evaluations, plan development, implementation meetings, and ongoing monitoring.
  • Evaluate student social and emotional needs under Section 504 and IDEA.
  • Participate in special education evaluations and IEP meetings in collaboration with ESS staff and district partners.
  • Interpret assessment data and collaborate with staff to develop appropriate student goals and supports.
Crisis Response & Student Safety
  • Provide crisis intervention support as a member of the school’s crisis response team.
  • Lead and coordinate student risk assessments including suicide risk reviews, self-injury protocols, and threat appraisals in alignment with CHSC and district policies.
  • Assess student risk, provide appropriate interventions, and coordinate referrals to outside services when necessary.
  • Support and reinforce school-wide mandated reporting procedures.
Family & Community Partnership
  • Serve as a liaison between students, families, school staff, and community service providers.
  • Partner with families to develop and implement behavior and support plans that help students succeed.
  • Coordinate referrals to community-based resources that provide wrap-around support for students and families.
  • Work collaboratively with outside agencies including family services, mental health providers, courts, medical professionals, and protective services when appropriate.
MTSS & Schoolwide Support
  • Collaborate with the Student Success Team and School Leadership Team to identify priority student needs and develop appropriate interventions.
  • Contribute to the implementation of the school’s Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).
  • Develop, support, and refine school-wide systems and initiatives that promote social-emotional learning, student wellbeing, and academic achievement.
  • Provide professional development for staff on topics such as student engagement, mental health awareness, mandated reporting, healthy relationships, and suicide prevention.
Data, Documentation & Compliance
  • Track and report data related to student interventions and program effectiveness.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and ensure compliance with school, district, and state policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information while adhering to legal and ethical guidelines.
  • Develop, document, and regularly update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for core job responsibilities to ensure processes are clearly defined, current, and readily accessible, supporting consistency, efficiency, and continuity of operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the School Leadership Team.

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) or related field.
  • Colorado Department of Education Special Services Provider License (or ability to obtain).
  • Experience working with adolescents, preferably in a school or alternative education setting.
  • Knowledge of mental health interventions, crisis response, and trauma-informed practices.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with students, families, and staff.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience coordinating Section 504 plans.
  • Experience supporting students in alternative education settings.
  • Experience implementing MTSS or schoolwide behavioral and social-emotional systems.

Compensation:

The starting salary for this position is between $57,257 - $80,754 depending on education and experience. A comprehensive benefits package is included. Teachers are eligible for the Federal Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program.
