Making Sense of Oklahoma

New Primer Shows the Original Intent of Chartering

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

On April 30, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear two cases out of Oklahoma related to the nation’s first religiously affiliated charter school.

The Court will consider important questions on the public nature of charters, like: Are charter schools part of state government? Must a state allow for charters that have a religious affiliation? How the Court rules will likely have big implications for the charter community.

Are you looking to cut through the noise and get to the facts? That’s where the National Charter Schools Founders Library can help.

Launched in 2017, the Founders Library is an initiative of the National Charter Schools Institute. Our goal is to preserve the historical foundations of chartering and give voice to the pioneers who led the way. We aspire to educate and encourage future generations by sharing the insights, lessons, and wisdom gained by those who came before them.

Preserving these historical foundations is important for times like today. To help make sense of the Oklahoma cases, we have developed a special primer with:

The foundations of chartering: Read original material and listen to oral histories from the men and women who shaped the charter idea into law.

Original intent behind charter laws: This special collection of seven legislative oral histories, six gubernatorial oral histories, and the oral history from U.S. Senator David Durenberger provides insights into how lawmakers intended charters to advance innovation within public education.

Oklahoma case: This easy-to-access collection of links makes finding Oklahoma’s charter law and information on the cases simple.

This primer can help anyone—charter leaders, students, journalists, policymakers, and the public—put the current controversy in context. Be informed about the public debate, and check it out today.

As always, let's keep winning for kids together!
