May 21 Business & Operations Networking (BON) Meeting Recap: Preparing for a Successful Audit

Thank you to everyone who joined our May 21 Business & Operations Networking webinar focused on preparing for a successful audit. As schools close out the fiscal year, this session provided a practical refresher on audit readiness, common findings, and accounting updates impacting Colorado charter schools.

A special thank you to our guest speakers: Chris Banta and Jessie Seibert from Hoelting & Company, Inc., for sharing practical guidance and best practices to help schools navigate the audit process with confidence.

    Key Takeaways
    - Audit readiness starts early. Strong reconciliations, organized documentation, and consistent review processes throughout the year make audit season significantly smoother.
    - Cash affects everything. Accurate and timely cash reconciliations are foundational and impact many other areas of the audit
    - Fund balance classifications are important. The session included a helpful review of restricted, committed, assigned, non-spendable, and unrestricted fund balances - an area where auditors frequently identify errors
    - Common audit findings are often process-related. Segregation of duties, P-card documentation, grant tracking, journal entry support, and reconciliation review procedures remain key focus areas
    - GASB updates are coming. The presenters also reviewed upcoming GASB reporting changes, including GASB 103, 104, and 105, and what schools should expect over the next several fiscal years
