Board Chair Cohor Recap and Planning for Next Year

    Hello Board Members,

Thank you to those who were able to join today’s meeting. Due to the small group, we did not record the session.

    NEW BOARD RESOURCE

I’m excited to share a new board resource: “Building Sustainable Charter Schools.” This tool is designed to support boards in reflecting on and monitoring key indicators of success and early signs of struggle.
You can access it here: https://coloradoleague.org/resource/taking-boards-from-reactive-to-ready.html

    BOARD RECRUITMENT

As we enter board recruitment season, we discussed a few practical steps for identifying and engaging strong community candidates (if your bylaws allow for community members):

    1. Create a simple board recruitment flyer. Include your school’s mission, board responsibilities, and expected time commitment.
    2. Identify aligned community organizations. Consider local colleges, credit unions, city council offices, law firms, real estate agencies, and community or education-focused organizations.
    3. Make direct, personal asks. Strong candidates are often recruited, not self-selected. A direct invitation can make a significant difference.

PLANNING FOR NEXT YEAR'S BOARD SUPPORT

Given inconsistent attendance in the current cohort model, we are exploring adjustments for next year. Below are several potential options:

Option 1: Expanded Peer Cohort - Open participation to all board members, not just board chairs

Option 2: Quarterly Deep-Dive Trainings - 4 sessions per year (90 minutes or half-day options). Focus on specific, high-impact topics and include tools/templates boards can immediately use

Option 3: Board Work Sessions (Product-Based) - Facilitated sessions where boards leave with a completed product.

Option 5: On-Demand Resource + Toolkit Approach - Curate more toolkits, templates, and videos aligned to the board calendar.

We would love your input on what would be most valuable to you and your board. Your time is incredibly valuable, and our goal is to provide support that is both meaningful and practical.

Please email me at [email protected] with the format(s) you would most likely attend.

Thank you for your continued partnership and leadership.

    In partnership,
    Kia
