League Statement on the May 22nd SCOTUS Charter School Decision
League Statement on the May 22nd, 2005 SCOTUS Charter School Decision

The Colorado League of Charter Schools applauds the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling affirming that charter schools are public schools. Colorado has set a national standard for making charter schools public and accountable, and charter schools have proven to be some of the most effective public schools in the state.
“Charter schools in Colorado are and always have been part of our state’s public education system,” said Dan Schaller, president of the Colorado League of Charter Schools. “The Supreme Court’s decision today affirms that and helps ensure that the more than 136,000 students currently attending charter schools in Colorado will continue to benefit from the unique combination of innovation and accountability that charter schools represent.”
Colorado and Oklahoma have very different charter school laws, and had this case involved Colorado, we are confident that the Supreme Court would have decisively concluded that Colorado charter schools are indeed public. With today’s 4-4 decision, nationwide, charter schools remain free, public, and open to all. And, particularly in Colorado, there is no question that charter schools are public schools.
