Founded in 2017, The Juniper School quickly ran into difficulties including, high staff turnover, low student retention, and a lack of a high quality curriculum, resulting in being given a ‘priority improvement’ designation by the state of Colorado.

In 2021, new leadership came to the school. Leadership determined that whatever the change, it would have to come from an organic movement from the staff and students. Over the next year, risk taking and experimentation became a focal point of school culture growth and improvement and recruiting high quality staff that not only aligned philosophically with the new vision, but had the skills to drive the vision forward.

The result was "Shredventurecation"--a new electives programs that addressed attendance, engagement, and agency, such that students take risks on their own behalf to learn. This resulted in a turnaround in the school including increased attendance, academic performance, and overall student well being.

Attendees of this session will learn about the challenges facing the school, obstacles faced through the process, and the steps taken to overcome these challenges.
