Workshop Sessions

Schools have invested significant resources in improving reading instruction, yet writing often receives less attention. But writing isn't just an ELA skill. Students use it to explain mathematical reasoning, construct scientific explanations, build arguments, and demonstrate understanding across subjects. Strengthening writing instruction can also strengthen literacy and learning.

In this interactive session, explore why writing is “reading’s missing half” and learn to examine student work through six interconnected dimensions: Apply this framework to sample student writing, identify instructional needs, and consider targeted strategies within existing ELA and content-area instruction. Discover how explicit, responsive writing instruction can improve access for multilingual learners and students with disabilities. Leave with practical tools to strengthen Tier 1 instruction and make the most of your school's existing literacy investments.
