What I Do For Charter Schools
(How Charter Schools Will Know Me)
I am one of the very first people charter schools talk with as they begin exploring what goes into the epic journey of starting a charter school!  In providing copious (and free) resources and technical assistance; dispensing advice and offering guidance around strategy and making critical connections; I will always be on the other side of the phone, table, or email chain to help new school developers navigate the process of starting a school. My work with new schools goes beyond the early exploration phase as I work with them throughout “year-0” (as a school’s learning curve entails how to implement the approved charter application), as well as continue to provide support in year-1 and through the first contract renewal process. Additionally, I work with charter school authorizers to share resources and information on best practices in authorizing charter schools.

On Charter Public Schools

I am adamant about the importance of public school choice and, as a mom of three, have personally benefited from having great choices- including charter, district-traditional, and district-magnet.  I believe that children are not one-size-fits-all and that their education shouldn’t be either!  Also, I have seen time and time again how charter schools are like that metaphor: “A rising tide floats all boats” and while it might not be quantifiable, I firmly believe that the charter community continues to make a positive impact on the overall quality of all schools.  Additionally, I LOVE working for the League!  The League was on the other side of the phone for me the first time I called to inquire about how to start a school and I am honored to be that person now for countless new school developers!  I love being a part of an organization that is so driven to provide service and support to our members with an unrelenting focus on quality options for all students.

Before coming to the League, I first worked in the residential treatment world. In 1996, I became the Founder and Co-Director of Trailhead Wilderness School, a wilderness therapy program for at-risk adolescents. More pertinent to my position at the League, I took a crash course in starting a charter school by organizing a steering committee and starting Georgetown Community School in 2005 after responding to the Clear Creek School District’s decision to close my children’s school. When not at the League, I am cooking, walking, hiking, doing yoga, and spending time with my family (not in that order of course)! I received my Bachelors of Science in Psychology and Sociology at Colorado State University.
