The League has partnered with highly qualified consultants to offer a variety of governance trainings to our member schools. These trainings are essential to risk management and the success of a school.  Board training needs to be prioritized annually to help safeguard the school. To help strengthen charter boards throughout the state, the League is happy to offer customized trainings to your board and school leadership team. Common training subjects include:  financial oversight, board committees, running effective meetings, external relations, performance management, strategic planning, policy development and board continuous improvement.  Most boards cover one topic per hour in a training session.

 

John Brendza
Education & Non-Profit Leadership Consultants Ltd.

John began his education career in Colorado as a science teacher for Eagle County Schools. Throughout his career, he has served as a Principal, Assistant Superintendent, Superintendent and Headmaster of a charter school. He has extensive experience in the development and implementation of education reform initiatives involving teacher training and evaluation systems designed to improve instructional effectiveness and student achievement. Additionally, he has led systemic efforts to restructure education compensation systems based on performance and results. His path into charter schools has been transformational as he found himself in the company of like-minded educators and parents dedicated to changing the way public schools educate students. He now serves as an independent leadership consultant who works with charter schools and nonprofit organizations. His current work is focused on improving the leadership capacity of nonprofit and charter school boards and school leaders in effective governance practices, strategic planning and problem solving.
He holds a BS degree from the University of Texas at El Paso, and MA degrees from Adams State College and The University of Denver. He has presented at numerous state and national conferences dealing with education reform and school improvement. He has served as a consultant for many organizations, including: The Colorado Charter School Institute, Colorado League of Charter Schools, Yale University’s Schools of the Twenty First Century, The University of Denver, National Institute for Excellence in Teaching, Archdiocese of Denver, Milken Family Foundation, El Pomar Foundation and the Youth Foundation. 
 
John is dedicated to excellence and he rejects the traditional performance of public education, where all too often mediocrity and the status quo are the norm. His vision is sharp and centered around one key goal: “to insure that students are given the opportunity to achieve their academic potential, and the most critical part of the process is making sure that a dedicated and well-trained teacher is in front of every student, every day.”

 

 

Jen Dauzvardis 

 

Jen Dauzvardis has been a leader in the Colorado charter school community since 2004.  As a charter school founder, former charter school board member, and consultant for the Colorado Department of Education, she developed a deep understanding and appreciation for K-12 education.  She has presented to local and national audiences on topics ranging from charter school governance and organization to strategic planning and finance. She is a board training consultant with the Colorado League of Charter Schools. As the Communications Manager at Peak to Peak Charter School, she works closely with Peak to Peak's administrative team on a variety of initiatives.

 

 

 

 

Jennifer Douglas

 

Jennifer Douglas, the founder of Right Hand Solutions, has a strong background in non-profit and school leadership. She is the founder of two public charter schools – Highline Academy in Denver and New Legacy Charter School in Aurora. She served as Vice-Principal and Executive Director of these two schools. She also has experience on a charter school board and sits on a foundation board. In addition to her school experience, Jennifer worked for 10 years for the Colorado League of Charter Schools in several different roles. Jennifer has raised over $3m for the organizations and schools where she has worked by writing grants that were aligned with the respective organizations’ programs and needs. With strong verbal and written communication skills, she is excited to support other schools and non-profits in meeting their goals. Jennifer received her B.A. in English and education from St. Olaf College (MN) and her M.A. in Administrative Leadership and Policy Studies from the University of Colorado Denver. 

 

 

Lisa Jarvi Nolan

 

Lisa received a bachelor's degree from Colorado State University in Human Development and Family Studies and a Master's degree from the University of Colorado in Early Childhood Special Education. She is also beginning the Executive MBA program at the University of Denver.

 

Lisa’s career began in the classroom and the five-year journey that followed included master teaching/training, school start-up, and staff recruitment. She has worked to create 17 charter public schools across the nation which involved the recruitment and development of governing boards, foundations, building corporations, charter application and related advocacy efforts, financial planning, and facility acquisition/renovation.  She stepped in to serve at the highest school level as an Executive Director of a large PK-12 charter school that served 1500 students. In addition, she was honored to serve as Vice President/Chief of Staff at the Colorado League of Charter Schools. She has served on charter school governing boards, building corporations, and foundations as well as local and state education advocacy committees.

 

Heather Otter

 

Heather is originally from Wyoming. Durango, CO. has been her home since the late 80’s when she moved there to go to Fort Lewis College. She started her career as a high school social studies teacher and later developed an interest in adult learning which lead to owning a computer training business with her husband Steve. She had fun helping individuals and teams work with hardware and software but mostly she just liked helping people learn new ways of doing things. Eventually, she was recruited to manage employee training and development for one of her clients. Heather spent the next ten years in the oil and gas industry building teams that lead the way in learning and leadership. Now, Heather works for Region 9 Economic Development District and serves on the board of directors at Mountain Middle School. She loves traveling around Southwest Colorado and working with local governments, businesses and schools on community projects.

Heather holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado and a master’s degree in Education from Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Heather, her husband Steve, and their son Mack loves to mountain bike, play cards, watch movies and eat pizza on Friday nights, get outdoors and take road trips in their old van.

 

Keith Ouweneel

 

Keith Ouweneel is currently the Director of Crown Pointe Academy of Westminster, a role he has held since 2012.  He is responsible for the academic program, facility needs, budget, and day to day operations of the school which include the challenging issues of 50 employees, 300 parents, and 500 students.  While at Crown Pointe, Keith has developed and implemented many changes to the curriculum, schedules, and programming that have positively affected student engagement and performance.  Prior to coming to CPA, Keith worked at a teacher, assistant principal, principal and school administrator for 15 years in Weld County, Colorado.  He began his career in education as a third grade teacher, a job his wife described as working with his “peers”.

In addition to his work in schools, Keith has presented to numerous state and national conferences on education best practices, leadership, technology, and board governance.  He has also consulted with governmental agencies on the topics of leadership, conflict resolution, and personal motivation.

Mr. Ouweneel holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Indiana University.  He has also graduated twice from the University of Northern Colorado with a Master of Arts and education specialist degrees in educational leadership and policy study.  He believes learning is a lifelong pursuit that requires constant growth and development which happen best in environments of mutual trust and support.
