Recognizing Charter School Achievement

Charter Schools Win 50 CDE Awards

Charter schools won 50 awards across the four CDE award categories for the 2018-19 school year. Congratulations to the following schools:

Colorado John Irwin Schools of Excellence Awards

The John Irwin awards are given to schools that demonstrate exceptional academic achievement over time. These schools received an Exceeds Expectations rating on the Academic Achievement indicator of the School Performance Frameworks reflecting exceptional performance in math, English language arts, and science.

Charter schools won 32 out of 174 awards or 18 percent even though they only serve 13.7 percent of students. Below is a list of the 32 schools along with the districts that authorize them:

Colorado Governor's Distinguished Improvement Awards

The Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Awards are given to schools that demonstrate exceptional student growth. On the school performance framework that is used by the state to evaluate schools, these schools "exceed" expectations on the indicator related to longitudinal academic growth and "meet or exceed" expectations on the indicator related to academic growth gaps.

Charter schools won 10 out of 93 awards or 11% percent of all awarded schools. Here is a list of the 10 schools along with the districts that authorize them:

Highline Academy Southeast – DPS

Horizon K-8 School – Boulder

Marble Charter School – Gunnison Watershed RE1J

Mountain Sage Community School – Poudre

New Vision Charter School – Thompson R2-J

Paradox Valley Charter School – West End RE-2

Pueblo School for the Arts & Sciences at Fulton Heights – Pueblo 60

The Connect Charter School – Pueblo County 70

Colorado Centers of Excellence Award

Each year, the Colorado Department of Education recognizes public schools in the state that enroll a student population of which at least 75 percent are at-risk pupils and that demonstrate the highest rates of student longitudinal growth, as measured by the Colorado Growth Model. On the school performance framework that is used by the state to evaluate schools, these schools have demonstrated impressive results on the indicator relating to longitudinal academic growth.

Charter schools won 5 out of 19 awards or 26 percent. Here is a list of awarded schools along with the authorizing district:

STRIVE Prep – Federal – DPS

Wyatt Academy – DPS

High School Academic Growth Award

The High School Academic Growth Awards recognize high schools that demonstrate the highest levels of students’ academic growth in reading writing and math, within each classification used by the statewide association for high school activities for the sport of football.

Charter schools won 3 out of 7 awards or 43 percent of all awarded schools. Here is a list of recipients along with sponsoring districts:
