Highline Academy Charter Schools Celebrates Record Academic Growth
{Denver, CO: September 3, 2019}:

The Southeast campus at Highline Academy Charter Schools is being recognized for its top growth performance in the Denver Public School district based on results from last year’s CMAS. Highline’s median growth percentile was 69th for English Language Arts (ELA) and 70th for math¹, placing them in the top 10 for growth among all DPS schools. The school experienced substantial growth among all student groups, including free and reduced lunch, English language learners, Black and Hispanic students.

Executive Director Chris Ferris noted the school’s growth is the result of campus leadership’s strategic vision to close the gap for underrepresented students as well as meeting all students where they are for collective academic achievement. ‘Our teachers, led by our Southeast campus principal Sarah Verni-Lau, have been looking deeply into what each student needs to succeed, from both an academic and social-emotional perspective. Highline staff’s dedication to rigorous academics and
creating culturally responsive classrooms has created our students’ success.’

69.2% of all middle school students met or exceeded expectations in language arts - a 7.1% increase over the prior year. Third through 5th graders saw an even larger increase in this area, up 16.8% from the previous year (63.2% met or exceeded). The percent of students who met or exceeded expectations in the district was 41.9% for elementary students and 43.6% for middle school students.

Highline is eager to build on this momentum and has no plans to slow down. "We are thrilled to see the hard work of our students come to life in our data; these results give us an opportunity to reach even farther," reported the Southeast campus principal Sarah Verni-Lau.

The Southeast campus for Highline Academy Charter Schools has 525 students and is home to a diverse population of students from all across the Denver-metro area. The campus was founded in 2004 and is anchored in its REACH values: Responsibility, Empowerment, Aspiration, Citizenship, and Honesty.
These values are the core of its program in helping students achieve academic, civic, and personal excellence.

1 The median is calculated by taking the individual student growth percentiles of all the students in the group being analyzed, ordering them from lowest to highest, and identifying the middle score. The median growth percentile tells us how much growth that group as a whole is achieving. - CO Department of ED Growth Model FAQs
