FIRST DLS KINDERGARTEN CLASS CONTINUES AS 8TH GRADERS; DONATES $20,019

Denver Language School’s (DLS) continuing Class of 2019 made a significant and impactful donation to the school. The class — the first DLS class to start in kindergarten and continue through to 8th grade — donated $20,019 as a matching gift to the school. This gift is dedicated to the success of DLS, its future graduates, and acts as the foundation to fund a sustainable future for immersion language education here in Denver and across the globe.

This donation is intended to encourage other individuals, families, organizations, and educational programs to contribute matching funds. These funds will collectively support the launch of the Center of Excellence in Language Immersion Education, an organization driving progressive immersion practices related to teaching, learning, and leadership.

In addition, this donation will enhance current efforts around self-directed student projects at the 5th-8th grade Gilpin campus. Plans are underway to broaden the impact of the newly introduced Capstone project by offering a toolkit to build project management and self-advocacy skills in the years leading up to the 8th grade.

Over the years, DLS has developed the knowledge and processes vital to a successful language immersion program while becoming a high-performing charter school in the Denver Public School portfolio. Officially launching the Center of Excellence allows DLS to share these valuable resources with other educators, districts, and organizations looking to start immersion programs, build leadership pipelines, create student leadership programs, and collect data specific to the immersion model. Additionally, the Center will foster partnerships to develop more opportunities for students in language immersion. Continuing to explore methods of learning and
nurturing network structures that facilitate the spread of excellent immersion programs benefits everyone – especially students.

The Center of Excellence in Language Immersion Education aspires to be recognized within
the country and around the world as a pioneer of progressive immersion practices related to
teaching, learning, and leadership. As an educator for the past 27 years, I am most proud of
the work that is being done in immersion education, the partnerships being made, and the
results being delivered. This endeavor creates a context for learning the immersion model
that will ultimately serve a greater number of teachers, families, and students.
