The mission of RiseUp Community School is to engage young people who have previously dropped out of school or are at risk of dropping out.  In a supportive learning environment, each student is held to high expectations, cultivates a sense of social justice, and is inspired to obtain a high school diploma and prepare for college and careers after graduation.


School Overview:

We believe that all students deserve an education rich in experience that allows students to be agents of change in their own lives. RiseUp Community School is a charter high school that operates in DPS that works to provide students with a community integrated and context-based education. Employees are key in the creation of an education experience that encompasses academic, career and college planning, and believe that the best way to learn is through applying new knowledge and skills to real-world projects. RiseUp Community School opened with our first cohort of students in the fall of 2015.


Position Overview:

The Director/Principal is responsible for the successful implementation of the school's mission and vision. The Director/ Principal reports directly to the Rise Up Board of Directors and has several major

constituencies, including parents, students, faculty, and Denver Public Schools as Rise Up’s authorizer.


The five main areas of school leadership that have been identified for the Director/Principal of Rise Up are:


Vision & Strategy

  • Participate with the Board of Directors to ensure that the organization has a long-range strategy and that it achieves annual goals that align with the broader vision

  • Communicate the mission and vision to all staff, students, parents, community members, and stakeholders

  • Lead and manage activities to implement strategic plans, goals, and operating priorities; measure and report goal achievement; evaluate results and revise strategies as necessary


Curriculum & Instruction

  • Oversee effective delivery of classroom instruction using data to track status and progress

  • Lead the instructional team in supporting teachers to achieve proficiency and growth goals

  • Lead and refine the instructional model


People & Culture

  • Hire and evaluate staff  

  • Manage and oversee staff development and growth

  • Maintain a climate that attracts, keeps, and motivates diverse, highly qualified staff

  • Cultivate and maintain positive relationships with all students and parents/guardians

  • Steward the values of the school and organizational culture


Community & Equity

  • Build and manage strategic partnerships that support the programming of the school

  • Represent the RiseUp Community outside the school community, locally and nationally

  • Create the systemic structures to identify and mitigate inequities within the school and to value and respect each family’s diversity and culture

  • Lead stakeholders in creating an inclusive environment committed to equity


Operation & Organization

  • Work closely with the Board of Directors to define policy

  • Lead on financial strategy including setting the annual budget, ensuring ongoing financial health, and participating in the auditing process.

  • Establish clear revenue generation strategies, annual goals, and detailed enrollment and fundraising plans

  • Engage personally with donors; cultivate strong relationships with foundations, major donors, and other funding partners

  • Ensure effective financial, security, and facilities management policies are in place and consistently followed

  • Know and honor all relevant local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations; manage any infractions

  • Manage press relations, social media strategies, and effective internal communications


Skills and Qualifications

  • Colorado Principal License or the equivalent in another state (with a commitment to become licensed in CO)

  • Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership or related field

  • At least four years of teaching experience and a strong record of helping underserved students achieve academic success

  • At least two years of experience serving in a leadership position

  • Flexibility and willingness to actively participate in school community including, but not limited to: teaching classes, tutoring students, and working with parents and families

  • Outstanding organizational skills and high attention to detail; outstanding written and oral communication skills

  • Ability to manage the ambiguity and multiple priorities inherent in an entrepreneurial environment

  • Proactive problem solver who demonstrates initiative and teamwork

  • Strong work ethic coupled with an enthusiastic and passionate approach to one’s work

  • Commitment to the belief that all students can learn and to the mission of educational equity

  • Spanish bilingual preferred


This position will begin January 1, 2019. Salary will be commensurate with experience. We provide comprehensive employee benefits.
