RiseUp Community School is a charter high school that operates in DPS that works to provide students with a community integrated and context-based education. Employees are key in the creation of an education experience that encompasses academic, career and college planning, and believe that the best way to learn is through applying new knowledge and skills to real-world projects. RiseUp Community School opened with our first cohort of students in the fall of 2015.

Position overview:

The School Counselor position requires a unique set of counseling skills. While the School Counselor is in charge of meeting with students to create academic plans, identify college and career paths and opportunities, and monitor student progress, they will also play a lead role in parent engagement. The School Counselor is in a unique position to help students navigate barriers to school and to connect with the families of students. The School Counselor will work also with Advisors and the Director of Curriculum to develop/support a program that provides exposure to post-secondary opportunities and supports the students’ academic and career goals.

Details of responsibilities and duties:

Academic Advising

  • Advise students on DPS graduation requirements and help develop students’ focus on college and/or career

  • Closely monitor students’ academic progress, grades & credits

  • Schedule classes according to students’ academic plan

Post-Secondary Support

  • Assist students to complete FAFSA and applicable scholarships, prepare for SAT’s and complete college applications

  • Work with colleges to schedule college tours and set up career panels to expose students to post-secondary opportunities

Collaborate with Staff

  • Develop curriculum to meet the ICAP requirement

  • Work collaboratively with school faculty and administration to develop strategies for supporting students in class or to recommend an alternative educational placement

  • Participate in staff-development workshops and activities, as required

Parent Engagement

  • Regularly communicate with parents and families to inform them of their student’s progress

  • Host parent and family meetings

  • Regularly communicate with parents and families to inform them of events and opportunities at the school and student’s academic progress.

Qualifications and experience:

  • School Counseling license

  • At least 2 years demonstrated experience working with high school aged youth

  • Self-motivated leader who can work independently as well as part of team

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

  • Knowledge of family engagement research and literature

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and in written form. Bilingual Spanish-English strongly preferred

  • Experience assessing student needs and coordinating educational and community-based services

  • Ability to work with culturally diverse populations

  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects and work in an environment with regular interruptions

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain accurate and well-organized records and use computers for data and word processing

  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor during emotionally charged situations, and explain policies, procedures, rules, and regulations in a non-threatening manner

  • Understands and respects the diversity of families’ economic, linguistic and cultural backgrounds and situations
