Lorna Beckett
Director of Research and Evaluation

What I Do For Charter Schools
(How Charter Schools Will Know Me)

I will be the point of contact for any research and evaluation needs that a school or partner organization requests. I’ll provide schools with statistics, data including student achievement, demographics, and questions around the school performance framework (SPF). If you are in need of additional data analyses, I will connect you to the appropriate League trusted vendors. My research will also support the league’s legislative agenda and I will be the project manager for the Charter Schools Facilities Initiative. I look forward to working with other Colorado organizations in the hopes of creating a collaborative network of educational researchers to elevate research and evaluation advancing student outcomes in our state.

On Charter Public Schools

I’ve worked in a variety of roles in K-12 education, primarily in charter public schools, for a number of years. As a special education teacher, I was able to serve my students and their unique learning needs more effectively due to the autonomy that charter public schools possess. I was grateful for the freedom to be more creative with the curriculum and make adjustments in my daily lessons as needed to better accommodate my students. The freedom, flexibility and autonomy charter public schools provide had a positive impact on my students and their overall achievement.

Background

I am currently completing my dissertation for a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at the University of Denver. Prior to joining the League, I worked as a researcher for the University of Denver, Denver Public Schools, and the Public Education and Business Coalition (PEBC). I worked previously in charter schools as a teacher, Special Education Director, and Dean of Students, spanning grades K-12. I received a Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies from the University of Redlands, and my Master’s degree in Special Education from Arizona State University. My passion is to make research and data accessible to educators and I strongly believe in using research and evaluation to help advance student outcomes. When I am not working at the League, I enjoy time at home reading, cooking and venturing outdoors with my dogs.
