World Compass Academy Students Get a Taste of Chinese Culture

Castle Rock, CO – September 25, 2017 - World Compass Academy (WCA) students learning Mandarin Chinese will soon be celebrating Zhongqiujie, or the ‘Mid-Autumn Festival’. This is the second largest festival in China after the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year), and is also widely celebrated in other Asian countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macao. The festival happens every year on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar, which is October 4 this year.

World Compass Academy, a PK-8 charter public school in Castle Rock, was built on the belief that children who learn a second language have improved academic performance, superior problem solving skills and score higher on standardized tests. A hallmark of the WCA program is a focus on their foreign language program. All students receive daily 45 minute immersion instruction in their language of choice: Spanish, Mandarin Chinese or French and the rare opportunity to learn multiple foreign languages before they enter high school. Not only do students learn a new language, WCA works to help them understand the culture of each country through various events, festivals, and celebrations.

“We are so excited to be a part of the WCA family! Our kids are thriving in the Mandarin and Spanish language tracks. It turns people's heads to see my five year old counting to 10 in Mandarin while walking in to the grocery store,” said Allison Coxe, parent of five students at WCA. “The students at WCA are given a true experience to learn more about these fascinating cultures through school-wide events throughout the year. We are so grateful to WCA for this amazing opportunity.”

The Chinese celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival on the night of the full moon because it represents the fulfillment of good wishes. Friends and family gather together for parties focusing on unity, giving thanks to the “golden fall harvest” and praying for good health, fortune, love, and children. Students on the Mandarin Chinese language path at WCA honor this tradition by learning festival related Mandarin vocabulary, hearing stories about the Moon Goddess Chang’e who flew to the moon 4000 years ago and sampling Mooncake. These traditional dense treats consisting of a soft pastry filled with sweet lotus seed paste, nuts, and a salted duck egg are as important to the Mid-Autumn Festival as turkey is to Thanksgiving, with the round shape of the cake representing the moon.

“This is such a fun celebration for our students learning Mandarin. The ability to experience a cultural event which represents the language they are learning helps bring it to life especially with the opportunity to try the mooncake,” said Mandarin Chinese teacher Yueling Yu. “Students really look forward to this event, and I’m hoping some of them are brave enough to try making a mooncake at home and that they take the initiative to learn more about the festival and Chinese history.”
