North Star Academy Announces School Tour Dates and Annual Character Education Theme

Parker, CO – September 14, 2017 - Since opening its doors in 2006, North Star Academy (NSA) continues to remain true to its founding vision of creating a strong character education program which was a hallmark the school's founders were passionate about. More than 11 years later, this holds true and continues to set this K-8 charter public school apart from other schools in the community. This year, the school will focus on compassion, wrapping this character trait around various lesson plans, service projects and school celebrations.

“Compassion comes naturally to students at North Star,” said NSA principal Kendra Hossfeld. “Children are powerful examples of kindness and compassion and I am inspired each day I get to experience their benevolence.”

Just one month into the school year and NSA students are already finding ways to show compassion to others around the world. The school's leadership council, which consists of 10 middle school students, participated in a fundraiser to help with Hurricane Harvey relief efforts. Kindergarten - 3rd grade students collected hand towels, washcloths, toothbrushes, bandages, soap, combs, nail clippers, and sealable plastic bags to be assembled and delivered to the Hurricane Harvey victims who were displaced from their homes.

In addition, while researching the safety and science of the recent historical eclipse, NSA learned that these types of phenomena happen much more frequently in other parts of the world. After purchasing certified eclipse glasses for all NSA students to watch the event the school partnered with Astronomers Without Borders (AWB), an organization that distributes proper eyewear to 3 rd world countries where solar eclipses happen far more often. North Star students had the opportunity to donate their eclipse glasses to AWB to distribute, making it possible for others to enjoy the wonders of the sky.

To enhance the student’s hands-on learning of the eclipse, middle school science teacher Morgan
Schneider developed lessons plans for both elementary and middle school students focused on learning about the science of an eclipse.

“My 7th grade students were just starting their Astronomy lesson. The solar eclipse was the perfect way to get them excited about the unit. We jumped ahead and had a mini solar eclipse lesson,” Schneider said. “My goal is to give students the sense of wonder and excitement. I hope they will leave middle school with an interest in the field of science. Hands on experiences like seeing a solar eclipse is what sparks this interest and has a lasting impact.”
