LAKEWOOD, Colorado -- Himmelman Construction, Inc. (Himmelman), a privately held commercial General Contractor headquartered in Lakewood, Colorado, announced today the completion of the renovation and addition of Addenbrooke Classical Academy (Addenbrooke), a tuition-free, public K-12 charter school located at 3940 South Teller Street in Lakewood. Addenbrooke holds a charter contract with Jefferson County School District and is governed autonomously by its own Board of Directors. Design services were provided by Denver-based DLR Group.

Valued at $4 million, this project included 4,000 square feet of new classrooms and administration offices and a new gymnasium addition totaling 17,000 square feet. The new addition included a professional, high performance maple wood sports court, changing rooms, restrooms, two music rooms, a full stage for school functions, and a lobby area.

“As one of Colorado’s premier K-12 Construction Management / General Contracting firms, we have become known in the K-12 market for our capability to establish a guaranteed maximum price (GMP) at a very early stage. Our approach to developing a GMP is highly dependent on our ability to fully understand and visualize the final product without the luxury of completed construction documents,” said Josh Hill, Himmelman Senior Project Manager. “While performing the preconstruction services for this project, it became necessary to arrive at a $4 million dollar GMP while the documents were still in the schematic design phase. By completely understanding the scope of the project and what it was going to take to execute successfully, Himmelman proposed a GMP at the early schematic design phase and was able to not only hold within budget but improve the GMP throughout the construction phase,” Hill concluded.

Founded in 2013, Addenbrooke’s enrollment will surpass 700 in its upcoming fifth year of operations. This charter school educates students through classical instructional curriculums and strategies as well as incorporating Charlotte Mason principles. The whole student is considered in their approach to education with music, physical education, and art being incorporated daily as part of their K-8 curriculum. All-day kindergarten and a comprehensive before and after school program are also offered.  Additional differentiators include small class sizes, rigorous study and high expectations for students, a focus on whole child development, and complete autonomy and flexibility with student curriculums.

“With physical education and music as part of our mandatory curriculum for our K-8 students, it was critical that we expand our campus to include a new gymnasium and music room as well as additional classrooms,” said Charles Wright, Addenbrooke Founder and Executive Director. “We strive to develop a love of learning and this new addition and added classroom space provides our students with the freedom needed to nurture the desire to learn and excel academically. As we approach full capacity, it is now time to savor our new space and enjoy some stability with regard to future growth plans,” Wright added.

With master’s degrees in Educational Administration and Exercise Science, Wright opened the doors of Addenbrooke in 2013 with 111 students and eight teachers. With the commencement of a new school year just around the corner, 250 new students will be enrolled in Addenbrooke with over 50 teachers to accommodate this remarkable growth.
