ACADEMY OF ADVANCED LEARNING DIFFERENTIATES WITH

PERSONALIZED LEARNING PROGRAM

Aurora, CO – May 10, 2017 -  While there does not seem to be a shared understanding of the definition of personalized learning in the academic world, Academy of Advanced Learning (AAL) is very clear on what it means for this free, K-8 public school opening in northwest Aurora for the 2017-2018 school year: a blend of teacher-directed and student-directed learning.

“At AAL, personalized learning is an approach to instruction that is centered on the student. It taps into a student’s needs, strengths, and interests to engage them and provide a “best fit” education for each student,” said AAL founder and CEO Mike Miles. “The instruction is tailored to the individual needs of the student, and students learn in the way that best meets their learning style.”

Academy of Advanced Learning’s personalized learning program will feature four distinguishing characteristics:

  1. Learner Profile is a summary of the student’s academic history, strengths, interests, social-emotional needs, and how he learns best. It is developed with the student and the parents/guardians in order to let the school know how to provide a tailored education that meets the individual student’s needs and goals.
  2. Student Learning Plan is the individualized, academic plan that will enable the student to reach academic proficiency and meet their other learning goals. It outlines the part of a student’s curriculum that will be taught directly and the activities and lessons that will be customized for the student.
  3. Flexible Learning Environment allows students to have a more tailored schedule and allows the teacher to use multiple strategies to differentiate instruction. Students may receive some instruction in a large group (23 students) or work in a small group, with a partner, or alone.
  4. Competency-Based Education allows students to learn at their own pace. If a student has already mastered an objective or standard, they can move on to accelerated objectives or to a topic related to their other learning goals. If a student is struggling with a particular concept, they can take more time and receive more individualized or small group instruction.

“We are focused on closing achievement gaps and allowing every student to reach their potential by tailoring learning to each student through personalized learning, and we have begun laying the foundation for this,” said Zach Craddock, AAL Principal. "We have hired experienced and effective teachers who know their content and what good instruction looks like. We will have more student contact days than traditional schools combined with longer days due to our free before and after care. Lastly, we know that school culture is the most important factor in a school's success. Effective teaching, clear communication, and high expectations from all stakeholders leads to a great school culture.”

The school will be located in Aurora in the Sixth & Sable Plaza at 441 N. Sable Blvd. Interested families can apply today at www.aalk8.org.
