Salida del Sol Academy announces that Paul Kirkpatrick, a distinguished educator who serves as the Principal at University Middle Schools has been appointed to lead Salida del Sol Academy as the new Executive Director for the 2017-18 academic year. Kirkpatrick was hired to oversee that the school has the proper model implementation and curriculum, resources and partnerships to be a lasting, positive force in the community and to ensure SDSA provides a high-quality education to its 720 K-8 students.

Salida del Sol Academy is finishing its third year of operation having opened as a new school in 2014 in a new 70,000-square foot facility that serves 720 students at the K-8 level.  It employs the evidence based Gomez and Gomez model of dual language immersion along with blended learning techniques made possible by every student having a personal computer. The state designation of “turnaround” status for Salida del Sol Academy based on two years of scores requires significant energy and effort so that each and every one of the students is achieving at their highest potential.  Equally challenging is the work of sustaining and expanding on the school’s past accomplishments so that the school can achieve its highest potential. The SDSA Board concentrated its hiring decision on the person who could support sustained academic improvement to guarantee that SDSDA students receive a high quality educational experience to become successful adults.

Kirkpatrick brings a wealth of experience to his new role serving over 35 years in the field of education. Working for the last 11 years directing the University Middle School with over 600 students, and 7 years as an elementary school principal at Johnson Elementary School ( K-6 Fort Collins) Kirkpatrick has experience in developing faculties and educational models.  Kirkpatrick also has experience in schools with high numbers of English language learners. Kirkpatrick has served also at Brentwood Middle School as an assistant principal for 3 years, Webber Junior High for 5 years as an assistant principal and at Franklin Middle School and Fort Lupton Schools as a teacher. Kirkpatrick holds a master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado and an undergraduate degree from Texas Tech University.

“Paul has all the qualities that we are looking for in the executive director role – infectious energy, enthusiasm for learning and a real ability to inspire students, teachers and the community,” said Co-Chair Rebecca Koppes Conway. “Paul will get SDSA to greater successes as we work to transform the school into a world-class learning institution for the students, parents, and community as a whole.”

“Paul is a long-term community member of Greeley and he knows our community’s unique strengths and challenges as well as anyone,” said co-chair Virginia Guzman Rosales. “I have no doubt that Paul has the strong educational background to succeed in this role, and I’m very happy we chose him to lead our school.”

“Paul Kirkpatrick is the best candidate to lead Salida del Sol Academy. He is an outstanding candidate with tremendous credentials, who I know will work collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure SDSA will be a high-quality neighborhood school. We greatly appreciate the community members who have supported us and allowing us to help identify a proven leader for our school.” said Greg Pierson, Board Treasurer of SDSA.

“As a Greeley resident and school principal, I understand the need for a high-quality neighborhood option at Salida del Sol Academy, and I am fully committed to ensuring this school is the world-class success that the community deserves,” Kirkpatrick said. “I look forward to the continuing development of this neighborhood school with rigorous instruction and a language program that will prepare our students for a bright future.”
