NORTH STAR ACADEMY ELEMENTARY STUDENTS WIN SPANISH VIDEO CONTEST FOR 2ND CONSECUTIVE YEAR
Parker, CO – January 26, 2017 - Students at North Star Academy (NSA), a free K-8, public charter school, are ringing in the New Year on a high note. As one of the school’s differentiators, all students participate in Spanish classes on a daily basis, which are aligned with the state and national standards of foreign language learning, and their hard work is paying off. For two consecutive years, NSA elementary students were awarded the Annual Student Video Contest from the Colorado Congress of Foreign Language Teachers (CCFLT).
North Star elementary and middle school students created, presented and recorded original videos in Spanish with English subtitles demonstrating the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages world-readiness standard for learning languages focused on presentational communication. The videos were judged based on comprehensibility, fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary and language control.
North Star 2nd graders Logan Knudson and Lucas Botyarov demonstrated their Spanish proficiency in their 1.5-minute video focused on getting to know Lucas’ family. As the “interviewer”, Logan asked Lucas to describe what he looks like along with questions about his parents and siblings complete with a Botyarov family picture in the background.
“Spanish classes are so fun,” said Lucas. “I love that I am learning a new language and can talk in Spanish.”
"Learning a second language can be fun and open doors to new opportunities. The best method to teach a second language is by providing students with comprehensible input immersed in a nurturing and conducive environment,” said Senora Crowe, a elementary Spanish teacher at North Star.
The CCFLT is a membership organization with the “purpose of the advancement of the study and teaching of foreign languages in schools, colleges and universities of the State of Colorado." During the 17 years CCFLT has offered student video contests, North Star students have had the honor of winning this award for three years, two of those consecutive years. Winning videos will be showcased at the 2017 CCFLT Spring Conference awards luncheon on February 25. More information can be found at http://ccflt.org/.
