Description: The task of bringing Waldorf Education to children has two sides: on the one hand are the abiding principles that make Waldorf what it is, that make “Waldorf" a meaningful term. On the other hand, there are continually changing, specific circumstances that create a context for these principles. In this conference, we will look at the tension between the abiding principles and the specific circumstances, and how a truly creative education can arise out of conscious engagement with both poles.
The opening lecture given by Elan Leibner, Chair of the Pedagogical Section Council of North America, will look at social networks as representative phenomena of the world into which children are being born. Without prejudice, we have to observe the nature and impact of these ubiquitous networks, and see what may be asked of us as
educators as consequence.
In the late morning, we will then set to work on a process called “Responsible Innovation” through which a faculty can establish baseline agreements for what the task of educating the children in a particular school entails. Each teacher will then develop one innovative idea and refine it through conversations and support from peers. We will end with a series of demonstrations of responsible new possibilities, hoping to inspire everyone to meet the specific children and circumstances of his/her school while remaining true to the abiding principles of Waldorf pedagogy.
Afternoon sessions will include a variety of pedagogical and artistic offerings. Possibilities, yet to be finalized, include: Math in Middle School, Authentic Assessment in the Classroom, Literacy grades 1-3, Movement Journeys in Kindergarten and First Grade Readiness, Child Study, Clay, Felting, Learning to Play the Recorder, and Natural Dyeing with Silk.
